The show, commissioned to MotoMimetico by the Association Nuovo Mondo, was presented at the Erwin Piscator theater in Catania during the 24th Nuovi Movimenti dance festival. Bolero starts off from the renowned musical score by Maurice Ravel. It is a universally well-know piece, defined by an obsessively repetitive structure of both the rhythm and the melody. Its tone is constructed with a crescendo that brings the audience to progressively discover the musical instruments that, one by one, join the other ones playing.
Emma Scialfa, the choreographer, in compliance with Ravel's original score, all its masterful interpretations and choreographic skillful executions, entrusts the acustic version of the play to Aptal. The Italian-Greek trio consists of GIORGIO RIZZO (ney flute and darboka, zarb, bender and dumbek percussions), MARCO CORBINO (acoustic and fretless guitar) and VASSILY KAKOS (tzouras, baglama). This remake of Bolero has been adapted to a trio of musician and a trio of dancers. Although this version of the masterpiece is less majestic than its original, it still represents a great challenge especially when it comes to its orchestration and choreographic structure. The show’s images are by CLAUDIO FAUSTI, a Roman director. Dialectic tension, adapting to the essential, and developing the expressive roots of the play, such as REPETITION, RHYTHM/ RITUAL, MELODY/THEME, are the guiding ideas of this endeavour.
